Thessaloniki (Salonica) Jewish Tour

A walk in the core of the city that once was the biggest Sephardic Jewish community in Europe! All there is to see in the city that for almost 500 years was known as, "Madre de Israel", Salonica remains irresistibly charming, still in the present day.

After a short orientation about the Jewish history of the city, walk with us in the center of Thessaloniki, where Jewish life used to flourish, from the 15th century until World War II.  We will visit the most important buildings, such as the two synagogues of the community, commercial streets, buildings of architectural interest and Jewish past, important bank buildings, the Turkish bath, the central fruit market, and much more. All together forming the administrative, commercial and financial center of the city, which, as you put the pieces together, was mostly operated by the once strong Jewish community of the city.

The highlight of the visit will be the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, where the magnificent Jewish past of the city will be clarified to the visitors.  We will also visit the Shoah/Holocaust memorial, on Eleftherias square, where the first important prosecution from the Nazis took place. By strolling through the streets of the center, our guests also have the chance to see and admire the most beautiful part of the city of Thessaloniki, the always-charming "madre de Israel".
