Athens Jewish Walking Tour

All of the Jewish sites of Athens plus a nice walk in the historic center and the traditional Jewish neighborhoods in one morning.

Starting our tour from Syntagma Square, next to the Greek Parliament building and its famous guards, we head for the Jewish Museum. We walk in the alleys of Plaka, passing the Ancient Agora, where the Synagogue was back in the ancient times and we explore the Jewish neighborhoods of the past...

Among our walks and stops in the alleys of those charming neighbourhoods, you will feel the ambience of the oldest part of the city. You will hear the history of the Jewish people both in Athens and all over Greece. Through old photographs you will be able to visualize their everyday life on those very alleys. We will visit the Synagogue, the religious and social center of the small but vibrant Jewish community of Athens. At the Holocaust Memorial we will discuss about the fate of the city's Israelites during the Nazi Occupation. We will cover the important subject of the Shoah with photos and information related to all the Greek cities. It is worth mentioning that Greece has a significant number of "Righteous Gentiles" honoured by Israel officially in Yad Vashem of Jerusalem. The new "Righteous Gentiles' Memorial" out of Beth Shalom Synagogue will remind us of this.

Along with all of the Jewish sites of the center, we will pass by important Archeological sites of the Classical EraRoman monuments and beautiful Neoclassical constructions of the 19th century. We will find on our way the remains of Ottoman Mosques that today are used as exhibition halls and typical Byzantine architecture in churches as old as the 11th century CE. All of the above will be connected with the history of Judea during the Hellinistic Era, the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empire Rule as well as after the Independence of Greece. We will visit the old Jewish Market, still named after the Jewish family who opened the first antique shop there and the former Jewish Quarter, today's hip area of Athens, full of restaurants and cafe/bars.

The Athens Jewish Walking Tour includes all of the Jewish sights of the city center plus many important non-Jewish sights. All that in just one morning!

The walk is not long and it is generally easy. However, if someone is tired there is always the possibility to stop for coffee/refreshment somewhere under the Acropolis, where we will rest for a while enjoying the best view of the Parthenon
