Giousouroum & family

In 1860 the family comes from Smyrni to the island of Kythnis, and from there to Athens. It has 2 sons, Bohor-Isaak and Eliezer. The first works as moneychanger and has a shop in Karaiskaki st. in Athens. The second works as an antique dealer and has a shop on Ivis st. in Athens. Both live and work in Psiri, the Jewish neighbourhood of Athens. The house of Eliezer on Ivis st., except from being his antique shop, it also serves as a Synagogue where Eliezer himself acts as a Rabbi. At that time there is no real Synagogue or Rabbi in Athens yet.

Monument of the Holocaust – 10/5/10, Diana Magania

The fragmanted star of David has a clear symbolism for the Jewish populations not only in Athens but in all of Europe, whose few remaining jewish populations are found scattered. More so, it represents a compass, pointing to every side where Jews were gathered to be taken. Having as a center the exact spot where on the 24th of March of 1944, 800 Athenian Jews were arrested and sent to Auschwitz. On the inner sides of the cut pieces, one can read the cities whose Jewish communities were destroyed during the war. Those words sculpted on the marbe, refer to a tombstone. The yellow - beige color of the marble, refers to the yellow star the Jews had to wear during the war. The monument is surrounded by a variety of herbs. Characteristic herbs from different corners of Greece are planted in front of every cut edge according to it's orientation. The visitor can walk around and through the monument, that with it's placement, color, size and smell, will help him sense and feel that he's standing on a place of healing as much as a place of memory.

Max Rochild & family

Banker Max Rochild came to Athens as part of king Othon's entourage. His son Charles Rochild (born 1843) was the first president of the first Jewish community of Athens in 1892. He was a merchant and had a shop on 83, Ermou st. in Psiri, Athens

Duchess of Plaisance

Donates on 1843, to David Pacifico, the ambassador of Portugal in Greece, an area of 3.200 sq.m. between the royal garden (today national garden) and Zapeion megaron, with the condition to use it for the building of a Synagogue. On 1854 David Pacifico dies. With the excuse that the condition remains unfulfilled, the municipality of Athens cancels the donation.

Beth Shalom Synagogue – House of Peace

It's name in Hebrew means "house of peace". Ironically it was finished in 1935, few months before the war. The Italians didn't touch it, they just locked and sealed the door. When the Germans took over they hurried to arrest the Jews and did not have time to open and steal/destroy the Synagogue before the war ended. So the Synagogue of Athens was left totally untouched Only some bullet holes on the marble of the facade are there to remind us of the tragic incident.
